Winning the top of the funnel

Has Google won the top of the funnel in every industry? How do we take it back?

These were the top questions during this particular speaker’s session during HiTech this year that really caught my attention. For everything in my life I feel like I start with Google. Need to know the weather? Google. Need to book a hotel or flight? Google. Need to spell something? Google. The dictionary has lost its spot in their industry.

This is an incredible feat and while I applaud Google, the obvious next question is how do you beat them? Even in just one industry, your industry. How do you get people to start with your site over starting with Google?

I am sure I do not know the answer, but it does make me wonder about what we should be focusing on. I think eventually Google will be so encompassing and that alone can scare people. I think we are seeing that with Facebook having such a huge market share that there are people nervous about how much information they have on them, and while not successful yet, we are seeing social media sites that are focused on security, privacy and ad free business models. Is there an intelligent model that works? I am not sure yet, but it is fascinating to see something become so big that their size alone sometimes is what scares people.
